Questions About Our Trails?
Everything you need to know about walking the Slieve Bloom sculpture trail, Fairy Glen, and forest stops in Laois
Our sculpture trail walks typically run 2–3 hours with built-in stops to rest and admire the artwork. We've designed the Fairy Glen experience as a gentler option—about 90 minutes with multiple seating areas—and the Slieve Bloom Way sections are broken into manageable chunks with rest stops at Kinnitty Forest and Glenbarrow Pool. You set the pace; we just guide you.
The Slieve Bloom trails are well-maintained forest paths with a mix of compacted earth and gravel. Fairy Glen is the easiest option with mostly level walking. Kinnitty Forest has some gentle slopes, and Glenbarrow Pool features a lovely flat approach. We recommend good walking boots with grip, especially after rain, but you don't need climbing experience.
We offer both. Our guided walks come with expert interpretation about the sculptures, woodland ecology, and local history—it really enriches the experience. If you'd rather explore independently, we provide detailed maps and stopping points. Many people do a guided walk first to learn the routes, then return on their own.
Fairy Glen and Kinnitty Forest have basic facilities nearby. Glenbarrow Pool is more remote but has picnic areas—we recommend bringing your own refreshments. For a proper meal, Kinnitty village is close by with a few good spots. We always let you know what's available before booking so you can prepare accordingly.
Spring and autumn are magical—wildflowers bloom in May, and the light in September is stunning for photography. Summer is busy and warm, while winter paths can be slippery. We run year-round, but we'll always advise on conditions and help you choose the best walk for the season. Each has its own beauty.
We cater to active retirees and older adults—not athletes. Our Fairy Glen experience is suitable for most mobility levels, while the sculpture trail and forest routes are for people comfortable with a steady 2–3 hour walk. If you're unsure, let us know beforehand and we'll match you with the right experience or suggest alternatives.
